As many of my designs consist of light colors, cute farm animals and traditional girl-oriented fare, creating a plaque for a young boy who liked baseball was a fun and interesting challenge. From figuring out what a baseball diamond really looks like (thanks Google) to positioning the pieces to picking the perfect font, I wanted this piece to be something Josh wouldn’t mind hanging on his door or wall!
I ended up with an abstract, almost mod, template for the baseball field itself:

I knew I wanted the baseball to be the “O” in Josh’s name, so positioning the bat in relation to the text and ball took a little while. I also didn’t want there to be any “dead” space, so that effected the composition as well.

On of the nice things about doing a sports related piece is there are plenty of patterns and imagery to pick and choose from. One of my favorite such patterns is the red threading on a baseball (which I had done once before, here). It’s pretty iconic and fun looking, plus the red really pops, so I used it as the border as well.

And here’s the final product:

Nikki, you did such a great job on this piece! It was exactly what I had in mind! My favorite part is the “O” in Josh
I love this one Nikki. I especially like your sentence that says that sports themes have many many patterns to choose from. As much as I am a sports fan I would never think about the many design elements it provides for creativity.
You are very good at articulating your creative process.
Keep it up!
